The Complete Works Of John Bunyan
By John Bunyan
With An Introduction by Rev. John P. Gulliver
Illustrated Edition
Published by Bradley & Co: Brantford, Ontario 1877

"John Bunyan (1628 - 1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher. He is best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, which also became an influential literary model. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons.

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is a Christian allegory that follows the journey of a man named Christian as he travels from his hometown, the "City of Destruction," to the "Celestial City," which represents heaven. Burdened by the weight of his sins, Christian sets out on a difficult pilgrimage after reading about his doomed fate in a book (the Bible). Along the way, he encounters various symbolic characters and obstacles, such as the Slough of Despond, the wicked city of Vanity Fair, and the Giant Despair. He also receives guidance and support from figures like Evangelist, Hopeful, and Faithful, who help him stay on the righteous path. His journey represents the spiritual trials and triumphs of a believer seeking salvation.

The second part of the book follows Christian's wife, Christiana, and their children as they undertake the same pilgrimage. Initially reluctant to join Christian, Christiana later embarks on the journey with the help of her companions, Mercy and Great-heart. Their travels mirror Christian's struggles, but they receive greater assistance, symbolizing the growth and strength of the Christian community. Throughout both parts, Bunyan presents a vivid portrayal of Christian doctrine, emphasizing faith, perseverance, and divine grace. Written while Bunyan was imprisoned for preaching without a license, The Pilgrim's Progress remains one of the most influential works of Christian literature, widely read for its allegorical depth and spiritual insights."
