"
Chums: An Illustrated Paper for Boys was a British periodical launched in 1892 by Cassell & Company, was designed to captivate young male readers with a blend of adventure, education, and entertainment. Aimed at competing with The Boy's Own Paper, it featured serialized stories, articles on topics like football training, and historical pieces such as those on Julius Caesar. The publication was notable for its association with the British Boy Scouts and the National Naval Cadets, forming a collective known as "Chums United Service".
The series was compiled into annual volumes, which showcased a variety of content including adventure tales, sports stories, and educational articles. These annuals were richly illustrated with black-and-white and occasional color plates, bound in distinctive red cloth covers with gilt lettering. While Chums was printed on lower-quality paper compared to some contemporaries, it gained popularity among readers for its engaging content and affordability. The publication continued until 1941, leaving behind a legacy as a cherished part of early 20th-century British children's literature."
General wear, staining and fading to covers and spine as shown. There are no inscriptions or evidence of prior ownership. Pages with a pleasant aged tone otherwise clean. Oddly, the coloured plates referred to in the contents are not present, however replacement plates are! Publishers error no doubt - see photos to illustrate. Binding is in good order with no loose pages. A nice copy in good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
