1864 The Childrens Garland Poetry Selected by C. Patmore Antique Childrens Book

The Childrens Garland From The Best Poets
Selected and Arranged by Coventry Patmore
Published by MacMillan And Co: London 1864
1st Edition - Eighth Thousand - Feb 1864
Provenance - Ex Libris W. P. Hurst. This book is very likely to have come from the library of William P. Hurst, primarily known as the editor of The Australasian newspaper, which was published by the Argus. He was also the subject of a portrait by Harry Bromilow Harrison, which was a finalist in the 1921 Archibald Prize.

"The Children's Garland from the Best Poets, selected and arranged by Coventry Patmore, is a thoughtfully curated anthology of English poetry aimed at young readers. First published in the mid-19th century, the collection gathers works from revered poets such as William Blake, William Wordsworth, Robert Browning, and others. Patmore's selections emphasize moral integrity, emotional sensitivity, and the wonders of nature and childhood. The poems range in tone from playful and imaginative to deeply reflective, introducing children to a wide spectrum of poetic expression while nurturing both their language skills and ethical sensibilities.

Coventry Patmore, himself a poet, carefully organized the anthology to suit a child's developing mind and spirit, with a strong belief in poetry's formative power. He included brief and engaging pieces that are accessible yet rich with meaning, often exploring themes of innocence, duty, beauty, and familial love. The collection stands as a testament to Victorian ideals of education and character development, offering a timeless introduction to the moral and aesthetic pleasures of poetry. Its enduring appeal lies in its balance of literary quality and child-friendly charm."
